Hans Urs Von Balthasar – To the Heart of the Mystery of Redemption

I have been reading on and off over the last weekend the latest Von Balthasar book which has been published by Ignatius Press.

To the Heart of the Mystery of Redemption

Anyone who has read Von Balthasar knows not only that he was a great theologion, but that he is a formidable challenge.

This book is quite accessible to the reader. It brings you to your kness before the mystery of the Cross as we contemplate the meaning of the passion, death and resurrection.

It also contains an interview with Von Balthasar (I think with seminarians). The interview is a wonderful window into the thought of Von Balthasar.

There is also a separate chapter on the theology of Thomas Aquinas and the “pro nobis” aspect of the Cross.

All in all, it is an excellent read and helps the Christian to enter more fully into the mystery of the Cross and Christ Crucified.

Just thinking – will people whose life on earth has been a permanent via crucis enjoy heaven more than those who have had an easy self-satisfied live here?

Book Recommendation: Cambridge Companion to Balthasar

I have finally bought the Cambridge Companion to Hans Urs Von Balthasar. It is edited by Edward Oakes whom I have had the opportunity to hear give a lecture on the future of Christianity from New York.

The book includes such outstanding writers as Aidan Nichols and Rowan Williams.

Anyone who has attempted to read Balthasar knows what a formidable challenge it is to understand this great theologian.

The Cambridge Companion provides an excellent introduction to Balthasar’s thought. The various essays are both profound and readable (not always a usual combination with books) and they also provide a key to unlocking the depth of Balthasar’s thought.

My favourite I think so far is Rowan Williams’ chapter on the Trinity.
